Artwork Archive: Tower Bridge, London

This painting from 2018 was one of my failed contributions to the theme of Bridges, a commission the studio was working on.

We were exploring the word BRIDGE as a connective, something that joins things together. That connection can be solid and reliable, like Tower Bridge in London, but it can also be fragile or vulnerable.

This is especially true of conceptual bridges such as relationships. In this picture I wanted to show the fragility of something we conventionally see as strong. I used the distort effect in Photoshop on a picture of Tower Bridge then sketched and painted the image. The most intriguing (and telling) detail I noticed just recently in this picture was how I chose to show the bridge’s cast-iron supports as puny stick people holding it all together in a precarious balancing act.
