A project by my local council, the very weird City of London Corporation, asked for portraits of people from your neighbourhood. The title was People Where I Live, but I chose to make a portrait of someone I have never even seen. The text I submitted with my portrait of Ted Bolt said:
TED BOLT SAYS RELAX, A PORTRAIT
By Billy Mann
I have never seen or met Ted Bolt. I know him only from his contributions to the Barbican Talk online noticeboards, where Ted’s voice is real enough. He could be a fictional character. He might not even be a He. For all I know, Ted Bolt could be David Beckham.
There is an unfortunate slip of my digital pencil on Ted’s torso, but I decided that silly mistakes were probably “quite Ted” too, so I chose not to remove it.
