Diary… Wednesday, Los Cristianos, Tenerife

While wishing the family a happy new year last night on the WhatsApp group, I asked if anyone felt optimistic about 2020.

◾ 2020 started very slowly. I always seem to have a limbo feeling on this day of the year, and this one is no exception.

Maybe it being a new decade adds to the wobble, but the strangeness is unsettling and nothing seems right.

So disturbing that I started wondering if the local Dino supermarket is open, and if so what food I might like to eat during the BBC transmission later of ‘The Sound of Music’.

◾ It’s blowing a gale outside. Bright sunshine but windy as hell. Don’t know if I can be bothered to get out of bed.

◾ Got a tuna pizza and a pint of milk from Dino, then back out into the sunshine to listen to Stevie Wonder and read Ed McBain’s ‘Hail to the Chief’.

◾ The peace was disturbed when I heard a splat, looked around and saw my wife Jane on the ground. She had fallen while fleeing a pigeon, which had entered the apartment through an open patio door.

She was not seriously hurt, but bruised and shaken. Investigation found the pigeon to have somehow made an equally speedy exit, but not before crapping on the white tiled floor.

◾ Sunset tonight.
