An exhibition of male depictions of women sitting meekly in their “Guilded Cage”. The Pre-Raphaelite Edward Burne-Jones distinguishes himself as Misogynist-in-Chief with a pompous ramble: “Women ought to be locked up. In some place where we could have access to them but that they couldn’t get out from.”
There were some notable disruptions (mainly from WOMEN artists and photographers), and these usefully brought the subject back to the here and now.
A challenging but refreshing reminder of where we once were and where we need to get to.
The Enchanted Interior is at the Guildhall Art Gallery, London EC2V 5AE until 30 August. Booking essential.
