‘The human body is a collection of balls and sticks’
This video came about when I was making an online tutorial for Headway East London’s art studio, Submit to Love, in collaboration with the Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning team. The video demonstrated a simplified style of monoprinting using low-cost materials. It was released under the title ‘Cut-Price Portraits’ on YouTube, but as I was making it, I started to question my own approach, so I literally explained to myself in video what it was about the Samuel Fosso self-portrait I used in the printing workshop that spoke to me as an artist.
I'm originally from Liverpool and worked as a national magazine journalist for more than 30 years before suffering a stroke at age 53. I started blogging as part of a neuro-rehabilitation programme and wrote the very first entries with one finger of my disabled left hand. Later, art became another therapy for me at Headway East London's Submit To Love Studios. I write about my daily activities and encounters. In 1988, I married Jane. We are still together today, sharing our lives and making each other laugh.
