Scenario: The Librarian


Super-shrunk stories written for the Headway East London writers’ group Babyshoes. The idea is to compose minimal story signposts for the reader to play with. Titles are prompts agreed by the group

The psychoanalyst asked her if she could remember why, at the age of 7, she wanted to be a librarian. She wasn’t sure she knew the answer. “I think I just loved books,” was her reply, which sounded pathetic as soon as it left her lips. Even in the long school holidays, while the other kids plagued the streets and parks in search of fun, she’d trudge three miles downhill to the city centre and sat all day in that old sandstone library reading and looking, looking and reading, all the time feeling cradled by… something. Sometimes she’d ask a librarian a question, and they always knew the answer, or where to find it. So maybe that was why, at 7, she wanted to be a librarian. It definitely wasn’t because she wanted to wake up rough sleepers and point them towards the bathroom.
